The “Spruce Lantern” Experience

A near full moon peaks through the spruce trees from Quartz Lake near Delta Junction, Alaska at 10 pm on September 5th.

It was my birthday eve and my wife Shay & I were truck camping our way up the scenic Richardson Highway, taking the long route from Anchorage-to-Fairbanks via Glennallen, Paxson & Delta Junction. The late summer “fall” colors were splendid and we’d seen the auroras for three nights in a row.

On this calm & clear evening I was extending my tripod for some nighttime photography when Shay called out, “Todd, the moon!” It had just started to rise through the trees so I had time to put on my telephoto zoom, focus, have a jaw-dropping WOW moment, and then click. I love shooting the moon and this was all part of a sensational birthday week!
